CATL, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited, is the world’s largest EV battery manufacturer, with 37% global market share in 2024 and revenue exceeding CNY 380 billion ($52 billion). In 2025, CATL entered the humanoid robot market with Xiaomo, a humanoid robot deployed in CATL’s own battery manufacturing facilities. CATL entering robotics is not a diversification story. It is vertical integration: the company that makes the power cells for humanoid robots is also building the robots that will use them, to be deployed in the facilities that manufacture both. This article covers Xiaomo’s specifications, CATL’s strategic rationale, and what battery-first humanoid design looks like.
Why CATL Builds Its Own Robot
CATL’s battery manufacturing is among the most demanding factory environments in China: clean room requirements (electrolyte contamination causes battery failure), precision assembly (electrode alignment tolerances under 0.1mm), hazardous materials handling (lithium, cobalt, NMP solvent), and 24/7 production pressure on a capital-intensive production line. These requirements make automation both necessary and technically challenging. Conventional robot arms handle many tasks, electrode stacking, cell welding, formation cycling. But tasks requiring navigation between stations, access to diverse equipment configurations, and judgment in response to varied material states have resisted full automation.
Humanoid robots address the navigation and general-purpose requirements. Rather than paying AgiBot, Unitree, or UBTECH for units and waiting for them to train AI models specific to CATL’s processes, CATL built Xiaomo to: train on CATL-specific processes from day one, optimize around CATL battery chemistry requirements that third-party companies would not understand, keep process data internal (preventing competitors from learning CATL’s manufacturing methods through robot training data), and develop humanoid technology that CATL can license or sell commercially in the future.
Xiaomo Specifications
CATL has not published full Xiaomo specifications. From disclosed information: Xiaomo is a full-size bipedal humanoid (approximately 170 cm). It is designed for CATL’s battery manufacturing environment, therefore IP-rated for electrolyte splash resistance, static-dissipative materials to prevent electrostatic discharge near battery cells, and compatible with clean room protocols. Battery: CATL-developed solid-state cells, the highest energy density battery cells available for this application, providing significantly longer operational time per charge than competitor humanoids using conventional lithium cells. The solid-state battery advantage is CATL’s unique asset in humanoid design: no other humanoid manufacturer has access to production-quality solid-state cells at this scale.
AgiBot CATL Deployment
Separately from Xiaomo (CATL’s own robot), CATL also deployed AgiBot G2 units in its factories in 2025, making CATL both a humanoid customer (AgiBot) and a humanoid manufacturer (Xiaomo). This parallel strategy reflects CATL’s scale: it can pilot multiple approaches simultaneously, learning from commercial humanoid deployments while developing its proprietary platform. The AgiBot G2 units handle tasks where AgiBot’s existing AI training is mature enough. Xiaomo is developed for CATL-specific tasks where third-party AI generalization is insufficient. By 2026, Xiaomo is reportedly handling 20-30 specific battery manufacturing tasks in CATL’s Ningde headquarters facility.
Commercial Ambitions
CATL has signaled commercial ambitions for Xiaomo beyond internal deployment. Bloomberg reported discussions with automotive OEM customers about humanoid robots for EV assembly lines, where CATL already supplies batteries and has deep customer relationships. Selling Xiaomo to BYD, NIO, or Geely factories would use existing supply relationships. The battery integration advantage (CATL energy cells, CATL battery management system, CATL charging infrastructure already in automotive plants) creates switching costs that pure-play humanoid manufacturers cannot match in automotive accounts.
