I am Stella Qian. The Engine AI SE01 has the highest joint torque and the fastest walking speed of any humanoid I have tested. Here is what that means in practice.
What is the Engine AI SE01?
Engine AI (星动纪元) is based in Beijing. The SE01 is a bipedal humanoid built around two key numbers: 330 Nm peak joint torque and 2 m/s walking speed. The gait system is learned, not analytically designed. This means the robot figures out how to walk through training rather than following a pre-programmed motion sequence. The result is better recovery from unexpected ground contact, but also a system that is harder to debug when something goes wrong.
Specifications
- Height: 170 cm
- Weight: 65 kg
- Joint torque: 330 Nm peak
- Speed: up to 2 m/s
- Degrees of freedom: 40
- Payload: 10 kg per arm
- Battery: 2.5 hours
- Price: from $80,000
Advantages
Joint torque. 330 Nm is the highest of any humanoid in this review. It gives the SE01 the ability to handle heavy loads, push against resistance, and operate in tasks that require force. For industrial applications involving heavy parts, this is the standout spec.
Walking speed. 2 m/s matches the fastest walking robots on the market. In large facilities where the robot needs to cover ground quickly between workstations, this matters.
Neural gait recovery. Because the gait is learned, the SE01 recovers from unexpected bumps and floor irregularities better than robots with fixed gait controllers. In noisy, active factory environments, this reduces falls.
Payload capacity. 10 kg per arm is among the highest available. It handles tools and components that smaller robots cannot.
Disadvantages
Neural gait is a black box. When the robot stumbles or falls, diagnosing why is difficult. You cannot read the gait logic like you can read an analytical controller. Debugging requires specialized knowledge of the training pipeline.
Price. At $80,000, the SE01 is five times the cost of a Unitree G1. The payload and torque advantages need to justify this gap in your specific use case.
No open-source model. Unlike the Unitree G1, Engine AI does not offer open weights. You cannot fine-tune the base model yourself. All customization goes through Engine AI support.
Battery life. 2.5 hours is better than the G1 but still short for a full production shift without a dock stop.
My verdict
The SE01 is the right robot for heavy-duty industrial tasks where payload, torque, and walking speed are the key requirements. If you are moving parts over 5 kg, working in large facilities, or need the robot to push against physical resistance, this is the strongest option in the Chinese market.
If your tasks are lighter and budget matters, the Unitree G1 or AgiBot G2 are better choices.
