Most coverage of China’s robot industry focuses on humanoids. Inovance Technology focuses on something less glamorous and more fundamental: the servo motors, drives, and controllers that power every robot regardless of form factor. In 2025, Inovance produced and delivered 5 million servo motor units, a volume that dwarfs any single humanoid robot manufacturer’s output by orders of magnitude. The company also launched the GR6150HW, an IP67-rated industrial robot designed for shipbuilding environments, one of the harshest robot deployment conditions in existence. Understanding Inovance explains the infrastructure layer beneath China’s robot boom.
What Inovance Actually Makes
Inovance is a motion control and industrial automation company, not a robot manufacturer in the traditional sense, though it produces complete robot arms. Its product lines: servo drives (power electronics that control motor speed and torque), servo motors (the actuators driven by those drives), PLCs (programmable logic controllers for machine automation), variable frequency drives (for controlling AC motors in fans, pumps, and conveyors), and complete industrial robot arms (6-axis, SCARA, and delta configurations). Revenue in 2025: approximately CNY 24 billion ($3.3 billion). Inovance is larger by revenue than most companies typically discussed in the Chinese robotics context. The servo drives and motors business, not robots, accounts for over 60% of revenue.
5 Million Servo Motors: What the Number Means
Servo motors are the muscles of automation. Every axis of motion in a robot arm requires one. A 6-axis robot arm needs 6 servo motors. A humanoid robot needs 20-50. A CNC machine needs 3-5. An injection molding machine needs 2-4. Inovance’s 5 million servo motors in 2025 means: approximately 833,000 6-axis robots worth of actuation capacity, or enough motors to drive 100,000-250,000 humanoid robots. In reality, these motors go into thousands of different machine types, robot arms, machine tools, textile machines, packaging lines, printing presses. The 5 million unit figure represents the depth of China’s industrial automation penetration better than any robot count can.
For context: FANUC, the world’s largest motion control company, produces approximately 3-4 million servo motors per year. Inovance at 5 million is producing more servo motors than the global leader. This reflects both China’s massive domestic manufacturing base and Inovance’s aggressive pricing, its servo drives are 30-50% cheaper than equivalent Mitsubishi, Siemens, or Yaskawa products, driving rapid displacement of Japanese and European brands in Chinese factories.
GR6150HW: IP67 for Shipbuilding
The GR6150HW is Inovance’s heavy-duty industrial robot designed specifically for shipbuilding. Payload: 150 kg. Reach: 2,800 mm. Protection rating: IP67, fully sealed against dust and submersion in water to 1 meter for 30 minutes. IP67 is required for shipbuilding because the environment includes water blasting, welding splatter, salt spray, and the dimensional instability of large steel structures. Most standard industrial robots are IP54 (dust-protected, splash-resistant). IP67 is a rare specification that only a few robot manufacturers offer.
Shipbuilding robots face additional challenges: the workpiece (a ship hull section) is massive and cannot be brought to the robot, so the robot must travel to the work on a rail or gantry system, maintaining TCP accuracy over long distances. Weld seams on ship steel are kilometers long per vessel. The GR6150HW is designed for this: rail-mounted deployment, long-reach welds, full environmental sealing. China is the world’s largest shipbuilder by tonnage (accounting for approximately 50% of global output), so Inovance’s shipbuilding robot addresses the largest single national customer base for this application.
Robot Business Expansion
Inovance launched its industrial robot line in 2014. By 2025, the robot business accounts for approximately CNY 3-4 billion ($412-$550M) of total revenue, making Inovance’s robot division roughly the same size as Dobot or smaller than Estun as a standalone entity, but operating with the advantage of Inovance’s servo drive technology integration. Inovance’s robot arms use its own servo drives and motors, enabling tighter hardware-software integration than competitors sourcing drives from third parties. This integration advantage shows in real-time performance metrics: acceleration, settling time, and path accuracy in high-speed applications.
Humanoid Component Role
Inovance’s servo motors are components in Chinese humanoid robots. The company has not publicly identified humanoid customers, but its motor specifications, high torque density, compact form factor, high bandwidth, match the requirements of humanoid joint actuators. As humanoid production scales to tens of thousands of units, Inovance’s manufacturing capacity and pricing are positioned to make it a primary humanoid actuator supplier. The 5 million servo motor production capacity is not constrained by humanoid demand in 2025-2026, the humanoid market is still too small to strain that capacity, but by 2028-2030 at projected scale, Inovance’s volumes will matter.
