JAKA Robotics: The Cobot Challenger Taking Market Share from Universal Robots in China

JAKA Robotics (Shanghai JAKA Robotics) is not a humanoid company, a heavy industrial robot maker, or a government-backed SOE. It is a venture-backed collaborative robot startup that has, in seven years, become one of the top three Chinese cobot manufacturers and a genuine competitive threat to Universal Robots, the Danish company that invented the modern cobot and held dominant global market share until Chinese competition intensified after 2020. Understanding JAKA’s rise explains both the dynamics of the Chinese cobot market and the strategy that lets a startup take share from an established global leader.

JAKA’s Core Product

JAKA makes 6-axis collaborative robot arms in payload classes from 3 kg to 18 kg. The product line: JAKA Zu 3 (3 kg, CNY 29,800), JAKA Zu 5 (5 kg, CNY 38,000), JAKA Zu 7 (7 kg, CNY 45,000), JAKA Zu 12 (12 kg, CNY 62,000), JAKA Zu 18 (18 kg, CNY 85,000). For comparison, Universal Robots UR3e (3 kg) retails at approximately CNY 95,000-110,000 in China. JAKA’s price advantage is 60-70% below equivalent Universal Robots models. The UR3e and JAKA Zu 3 have broadly equivalent repeatability specifications (±0.03mm for UR3e, ±0.02mm for JAKA Zu 3), eliminating the specification argument for paying the UR premium in most applications.

Software: The JAKA App Store

JAKA’s competitive differentiation is not only price. The company invested heavily in an application software sector, the JAKA App Store, that enables users to install pre-configured application packages for common tasks: machine tending, screwdriving, dispensing, palletizing, pick-and-place, welding. Each app provides a pre-programmed task interface that reduces commissioning time from days to hours. More than 200 application packages are available from JAKA and third-party developers. Universal Robots has a similar sector (UR+ marketplace) with over 300 applications, JAKA has not yet matched UR+ depth, but the gap has closed from insurmountable to competitive.

Funding and Growth

JAKA raised Series D financing of $100 million in 2023, valuing the company at approximately $800 million. Total funding: approximately $250 million. Revenue in 2025: approximately CNY 600-800 million ($82-$110 million), making JAKA one of the largest revenue Chinese cobot companies, comparable to Han’s Robot and below Dobot. Units shipped: approximately 8,000-12,000 cobots per year in 2025. Export ratio: approximately 25-30%, with European and Southeast Asian markets as primary export destinations. JAKA has a European office in Munich and distribution agreements with major European automation distributors.

Universal Robots Response

Universal Robots (owned by Teradyne since 2015) has responded to Chinese competitive pressure with: a new UR20 and UR30 platform targeting heavier payloads (20 kg and 30 kg) where Chinese competitors are weaker, pricing adjustments in the Chinese market (reducing UR prices by 15-20% for volume customers), and an emphasis on sector depth (UR+ marketplace, certified integrators, application support) as the differentiation that justifies premium pricing. Universal Robots retains advantages in: global integrator network depth (thousands of certified integrators versus hundreds for Chinese cobots), compliance certifications (CE, UL, FDA for medical applications, more complete than Chinese competitors), and payload accuracy at the top of each range. The price gap has narrowed but not closed, UR still charges 50-60% premium over JAKA for comparable specifications.

Where JAKA Wins

JAKA wins on price-sensitive applications where specifications are adequate and integration support is available locally. Typical wins: Chinese SME machine tending (the dominant cobot application in Chinese manufacturing), electronics assembly in Southeast Asian factories, and screwdriving/dispensing applications where the JAKA app sector provides pre-built solutions. JAKA loses to UR where: FDA or medical device compliance is required, global service network is required (UR has service centers in 30+ countries, JAKA in fewer than 10), or very high duty cycle (UR’s 10-year track record at automotive duty cycles is not yet matched by JAKA’s shorter commercial history).
