Galaxy General Robotics built the G1 around one differentiation: the most dexterous hands available in a Chinese humanoid robot. The February 4, 2026 Spring Festival Gala executed that differentiation in front of 730 million viewers, Galbot G1 robots rolling walnuts in their palms, picking glass fragments from a surface, and retrieving specific items from dense retail shelving. Fully autonomous. No teleoperation. The tasks were chosen because they require manipulation at the frontier of what robots can do: walnut rolling requires real-time tactile adjustment through in-hand object repositioning, glass fragment picking requires sub-centimeter precision with sub-Newton force control, cluttered shelf retrieval requires selective grasping without disturbing adjacent objects.

12-DOF Hand: Technical Breakdown
Human hands have approximately 27 DOF (21 in fingers, 6 in wrist). Galbot G1 hands reach 12 DOF, closer to human kinematics than any competing Chinese humanoid:
- Thumb: 3 DOF, CMC flexion/extension, abduction/adduction; MCP flexion
- Index finger: 2 DOF, MCP flexion/extension, PIP flexion
- Middle finger: 2 DOF, same as index
- Ring finger: 2 DOF, same as index
- Little finger: 2 DOF, same + MCP abduction
- Finger coupling: ring and little optionally coupled for power grip, independent for precision tasks
The 12 DOF enables grip topologies impossible for lower-DOF hands: lateral pinch (thumb against index side), three-jaw chuck, spherical grip, and in-hand object rotation, repositioning objects within the palm without releasing and re-grasping. Walnut rolling demonstrated in the Spring Festival Gala required in-hand object rotation: the walnut rolls between fingers and palm through coordinated micro-movements of all 5 fingers simultaneously. This separates dexterous manipulation robots from basic gripper robots.
Galaxy Embodied Large Model
Galbot’s proprietary AI processes stereo camera streams, natural language task instructions, and robot state data in a single multimodal context. The model is developed from Galaxy General Robotics own architecture and training data accumulated from BAIC and CATL production deployments, not a fine-tuned foundation model from an external provider. The Gala performance demonstrates the model executing unscripted dexterous manipulation in a live broadcast where retries were not possible.
